For more than a century the company Auguste Reymond has produced watches in Tramelan, a village located in the the Jura mountains, the very heart of the Swiss watch industry. A place far away from the hustle of the big cities, a place where time is still a value on its own, not just a matter of ephemeral trends or fast money, a place where we can still take our time to create timeless beauty. Far aside from the current global marketing strategies of the big luxury groups our independent, family-owned company offers you the genuine luxury of an authentic product, that is manufactured only in small series, and that is still assembled by hand by craftsmen whose skills have been transmitted to them by generations of watch-makers. The history of Auguste Reymond begins in 1898, the year a young man of twenty-seven rented a small appartment in Tramelan and hired a handful of watch-makers to start manufacturing watches that would bear his name. He soon met with success. By 1910 his modest business had grown into a huge factory that employed over one hundred people in its own premises. Auguste Reymond himself had become one of the happy fews that were nicknamed the “watch barons” in the Jura mountains. The movements produced by the Manufacture A. Reymond, known for their high quality and competitive prices, were also supplied to numerous other watch manufacturers and have become famous world-wide under their brand name UNITAS. |

The size of our
company - a dozen of collaborators - and our way of working - in our
ateliers each watch is still assembled by hand - make us consider
ourselves as artisans rather than industrial manufacturers. This aspect
also applies for most of our suppliers. Even if high-tech plays a growing
part in the production of watch parts, the eye and the hand remain the
indispensable tools in the achievement of a watch of high quality. The
know-how and the sure hand of the artisan become essential once the step
of the last finish is reached, once each detail has to be worked on with
infinite care. This is true for the polishing of the cases, the decoration
of the movement bridges, the sewing of the leather strap, the cutting of
the hands, without even mentioning the many vital operations in the
process of assembling a mechanical movement, which are all made by hand.
Therefore each Auguste Reymond watch is a unique piece in its own, with
its qualities and its imperfections. Because the perfect watch does not
exist. But our satisfaction is to be able to say to ourselves that, for
each watch that comes out of our workshop, we have given our best to come
as close as possible to perfection and that the motto “tradition et
qualité” that is printed on the back of our watches has been
scrupulously respected. |

Among the many arguments that plead
for the use of mechanical movements, which range from purely emotional
considerations to medical recommendations, we would like to stress the
one that concerns environmental issues. A mechanical watch is not
operated by a battery. So there is no battery to throw away. The only
energy your mechanical watch needs is the one that you transmit to it by
winding-up its crown or, for the automatic styles, just by wearing it. A
mechanical watch is by no means a throw-away item. It will last a
lifetime and your children or grand-children will be able to have it
repaired in fifty or even a hundred years.
Whereas a quartz watch will be dead
by the time its electronic components will no longer be available, which
is already the case today for certain quartz movements that have been
produced no longer than twenty years ago.

Auguste Reymond is a discreet
brand. You will see it only rarely appear on the glossy paper of fashion
magazines or on television screens. For us this is a matter of choice.
We sell a product, not its image. When you buy an Auguste Reymond watch
you are not ruining yourself to act as a sponsor for the measurements of
a top-model, to reward the victories of a sportsman nor to support the
glamourous smile of a movie star, but you are just paying the price of a

The two key words of our business philosophy are honesty an creativeness. As an old slogan of the twenties stated it, Auguste Reymond proposes watches that are “sérieuses et avantageuses”. In our world where values become more and more virtual, more and more speculative, our firm - although may be a bit obsolete - belief is that we have to continue to create absolutely real watches and to offer them to prices that correspond to their reality. Creativeness is the other motivation of our activity. Watch-making is a twofold art, permanently oscillating between technical and aesthetic standards. A watch must be an instrument with functionality and, at the same time, a piece of jewelry with an emotional value. The task of the watch designer is to reach the balance that will allow the watch to be both beautiful and useful. As we have tried to suggest it by using references to jazz music, this constant search of balance requires a solid technique as well as the capacity of being open to all kinds of artistic inspirations.
